 | Introduced in 1995, the Ford Contour/Mercury Mystique is Fords first world car and essentially the Ford and Mercury differ only in exterior and interior trim. The base engine is Fords 125 horsepower, 2.0 litre inline-four Zetec. More than adequate when hooked up to the 5-speed manual, it feels a little taxed when mated to the 4-speed auto. If you want the automatic, move up to the SE and its 170 horsepower 2.5 litre V-6. For maximum bang and not much more money, get the Contour SVT, a thoroughly massaged unit which boasts 195 horsepower, as well as bigger tires, brakes, firmer suspension and more aggressive bodywork. Recent upgrades have increased the rear seats legroom, long a sore point with the original Contour/Mystique. Its still not as roomy as some of its traditional domestic competition, but its at least bearable. Handling is good for the base cars, with the SVT having exceptional road-holding. The ride is also excellent. Trunk space is at a minimum, however. ABS and dual airbags are standard.
