Manaslu Circuit Trek is one of the most beautiful and peaceful trekking routes in Nepal. Hidden between Annapurna and Langtang, this off the beaten trail takes you through remote villages, wild rivers, high mountain passes and around Mt. Manaslu, the 8th highest peak in the world at 8,163 meters.
While the trek is beautiful all year round (except summer monsoon), there’s one season that makes this journey truly special: autumn.

Why Autumn is the Best Time to Trek Manaslu
Autumn in Nepal is from mid September to late November. During this time the air is clean and crisp, skies are clear and the forests and hills turn into a canvas of colors. It’s also the time of important festivals and cultural celebrations so you can experience village life at its most vibrant and colorful.
Let’s take a look at what makes autumn the perfect time to trek Manaslu Circuit:
Fall Colors and Landscapes
In autumn the forests and hills of Manaslu region change color in the most amazing way. The trees turn golden, red, orange and yellow especially in the middle and lower part of the trek. Although rhododendrons (Nepal’s national flower) bloom in spring, in autumn their leaves change color and it’s like walking through a painting. From Jagat to Samagaon you’ll pass through jungles, riverbanks and meadows that look like a painting. The golden light of autumn sun makes everything soft and warm especially in the morning and late afternoon a photographer’s dream!
Clear Skies and Unbelievable Mountain Views
One of the reasons trekkers love autumn is because of clear skies. After the summer monsoon the air is clean of dust and moisture. This means the sky is blue, clouds are fewer and you can see the mountains from miles away. You’ll see Mt. Manaslu, Himalchuli, Ngadi Chuli and even Ganesh Himal as you walk along the trail. The best time for these views is October and early November when the weather is most stable. Sunrise and sunset during this time creates dramatic colors on the snow capped peaks—a sight to behold, especially from Lho Village or when you reach Larke La Pass.
Local Festivals and Cultural Experiences
Autumn isn’t just about nature—it’s also the most festive time of the year in Nepal. Two of the country’s biggest celebrations—Dashain and Tihar—happen during this season. These festivals bring families together and fill villages with colorful decorations, music, traditional dances and lights.
When you trek through villages like Lho, Samagaon or Samdo you might see locals celebrating with special foods, rituals and community gatherings. In many places you’ll hear monks chanting prayers at monasteries, children playing and flying kites and homes decorated with oil lamps and flower garlands. This gives you a chance to see the real life and culture of mountain people—something you’ll remember long after your trek is over.
Comfortable Weather for Walking
Trekking in the Himalayas can be tough but autumn makes it easier. During this season the weather is cool and pleasant, especially for long walks.
In the lower part of the trail daytime temperature is usually between 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F). It’s warm enough to walk in light clothing. As you climb higher the temperature gets cooler especially at night but it’s still manageable with a good sleeping bag and warm layers. Dharmasala (the last stop before Larke Pass) can drop to 0°C to 5°C (32°F to 41°F) at night but during the day it’s still good for walking.
The best part is you won’t face extreme cold like in winter or mud and leeches like in monsoon. This makes autumn the safest and most comfortable season to cross Larke La Pass, the highest point of the trek.### All Teahouses Are Open and Welcoming
During autumn all the teahouses (local lodges) along the trail are open and fully stocked. So you don’t have to worry about where to sleep or eat. These teahouses are usually small, cozy and run by friendly local families where you can enjoy hot food like dal bhat (rice with lentil soup), noodles, soup, tea and even chocolate pancakes!
In the evenings sitting near the fire in a teahouse, sharing stories with other trekkers, sipping butter tea and watching the stars above the mountains feels warm and peaceful—a perfect way to end a day of walking.
More Authentic, Less Crowded
Although autumn is the busiest trekking season in Nepal, Manaslu Circuit Trek still feels peaceful and less crowded compared to Everest or Annapurna. You’ll meet a few trekkers on the trail but it won’t feel overwhelming. The villages are not overdeveloped and the whole area feels authentic and untouched.
If you’re someone who prefers quiet moments, personal experiences and getting closer to nature and culture Manaslu in autumn gives you the perfect mix of liveliness and solitude.
Great Value for Money
The cost of Manaslu Circuit Trek during autumn is also a good deal for what you get. Since the weather is stable and most teahouses are open you don’t need to carry heavy camping gear or rent snow gear. This helps keep the cost lower.
On average you can expect to spend around $1,200 to $1,600 USD. This usually includes:
- All necessary permits (including the restricted area permit)
- A professional guide
- A porter (to carry your backpack)
- Food and accommodation
- Transportation to and from the trail
If you want to explore more you can add the Tsum Valley trek, which costs extra but offers even deeper cultural experiences. Autumn is the best time to do both treks together.
Ideal Time for Side Trips and Acclimatization Walks
Autumn’s dry weather also makes it safe and fun to take extra short hikes along the way. You can:
- Visit Pungyen Gompa, a beautiful monastery with mountain views* Hike up to Manaslu Base Camp to see the glacier up close
- Walk to Birendra Lake (Birendra Tal), a peaceful alpine lake near Samagaon
These side trips help you acclimatize slowly (that’s what it’s called) which makes crossing Larke La Pass much easier and safer.
Manaslu at Its Best in Autumn
In summary autumn is the best time to do the Manaslu Circuit Trek. The colors are more vibrant, the views are clearer, the culture is more alive and the experience is smoother and more enjoyable. Whether you’re an experienced trekker or a first timer looking for something different autumn gives you the perfect opportunity to experience Manaslu in its purest form.
You’ll not only see amazing landscapes and high mountains but you’ll also connect with Nepal—its people, its traditions and its nature.
So if you’re planning your next big adventure make it Manaslu this fall. It’s not just a trek—it’s a journey you’ll never forget.
