Best Action Movies 2026: My Top 15 Picks

2026 has been a really good year for action movies so far. We got a Netflix movie that looked cheap but turned out to be a lot of fun, a Jason Statham movie about a man trapped on an island, a funny action movie with Bob Odenkirk, a small war movie set in Ukraine, and a huge Christopher Nolan epic. I don’t usually make “best of” lists like this, because someone always asks why a movie isn’t on it. But there have already been so many good ones this year that I wanted to try a real countdown. So instead of just showing you posters, here are my 15 picks for the best action movies of 2026 so far, with the trailers right here so you can watch them yourself. 

15. Man of War

William Kaufman remains one of the most reliable names in indie action, and this one’s his Ukraine-set gut-punch: a retired Navy SEAL and CIA operative crossing into a warzone to bring back a kidnapped aid worker. Low budget, high body count, and genuinely tense, grounded gunfights exactly the kind of unpretentious DTV banger that deserves a spot on this list every year.

14. Pretty Lethal

Five ballerinas on their way to a competition break down outside a remote inn run by a former ballet prodigy (Uma Thurman), and things get bloody fast. It’s a silly premise executed with real commitment, and Thurman clearly having fun as the villain goes a long way. Not high art, but a fun John Wick-adjacent B-movie with pointe shoes as weapons. 

13. Normal

Bob Odenkirk continues his unlikely second act as an action star, playing an interim sheriff who discovers his sleepy new town is hiding something very not-sleepy. Written by John Wick creator Derek Kolstad and directed by Ben Wheatley (Free Fire), it’s got the same scrappy, over-the-top energy as Nobody, just with more snow and more Yakuza. 

12. Beast

An MMA comeback story with real teeth: a retired champion (Daniel MacPherson) is pulled back into the cage when his brother is threatened, reuniting with his old coach (Russell Crowe, who also co-wrote it). The fight choreography is stiff and brutal in the way MMA movies rarely bother getting right, and Crowe brings more weight to the corner-man role than it probably needed.

11. The Bluff

A properly nasty pirate siege movie, which we don’t get nearly enough of these days. Priyanka Chopra plays a former pirate trying to live quietly with her family until Karl Urban’s scenery-chewing captain shows up looking for revenge. Knife fights, swordplay, and Urban throwing WWE-style clotheslines it’s a period actioner built for the John Wick generation.

10. Shelter

Jason Statham does what Jason Statham does best: play a dangerous man with a dark past who just wants to be left alone. A former MI6 assassin living in isolation on a remote Scottish island ends up protecting a young girl from the agency that wants him dead, with a terrific car chase through the Scottish countryside along the way.

9. Fuze

An unexploded WWII bomb turns up on a London construction site, forcing a citywide evacuation, and a crew of thieves decides the chaos is the perfect cover for a heist. David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water) mixes Hurt Locker-style bomb disposal tension with old-school heist mechanics, and it mostly sticks the landing. 

8. Motor City

Alan Ritchson goes almost entirely silent for this one, playing a framed ex-con out for revenge in 1970s Detroit. Described as somewhere between an opera, a music video, and an action movie, it’s a genuinely unique swing, all muscle cars, needle drops, and violence that does the talking Ritchson doesn’t.

7. War Machine

Basically Predator with a giant alien mech instead of a Yautja, and I mean that as a compliment. Alan Ritchson leads a squad of Army Ranger candidates whose final training exercise turns into a fight for survival against an “unimaginable threat.” It’s lean, loud, and exactly as ridiculous as it sounds. Ritchson continues to be one of the few actors who can sell this stuff completely straight-faced. 

6. Reckless

Scott Adkins and Vinnie Jones team up for a scrappy British heist comedy about a former convict trying to outwit the police to get his share of an old score. It’s rougher around the edges than the big-budget stuff on this list, but Adkins never phones in a fight scene, and this one’s got a genuine sense of fun to it.

5. Crime 101

A loving, well-executed homage to Heat, with Chris Hemsworth as an elusive jewel thief eyeing one last score along the Pacific Coast Highway, Mark Ruffalo as the detective closing in, and Halle Berry caught in the middle. Nobody’s reinventing the genre here, but the chase sequences are some of the most memorable of the year.

4. The Rip

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon reunite for a twisty, tense cop thriller about a Miami narcotics team that discovers millions in cash and quickly realizes trusting each other might be the bigger threat. Director Joe Carnahan (The Grey) keeps it moving, and the two leads are clearly having a blast working together again.

3. Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Peter Parker, forgotten by a world that no longer remembers Spider-Man, tries to leave the mask behind and can’t. It’s the biggest blockbuster on this list by a mile, and while the plot machinery is familiar, the action set pieces, including some genuinely great Spider-Man-versus-Hulk brawling, are as good as this franchise has looked in years, making it one of the standout superhero entries among the best action movies of 2026. 

2. The Furious

When his daughter is abducted by a trafficking ring, an ordinary tradesman (Xie Miao) teams up with a journalist (Joe Taslim) to tear through a criminal empire to get her back. Director Kenji Tanigaki is a stunt coordinator turned filmmaker, and it shows; this has some of the best-choreographed fight scenes of the year, full stop. Think Taken cranked up to eleven.

1. The Odyssey

Christopher Nolan’s “mythic action epic” take on Homer, shot entirely on IMAX 70mm with Matt Damon as Odysseus fighting his way home through Cyclopes, sirens, and worse. It’s the biggest, most ambitious action movie of the year by a wide margin, and it earns the scale — genuinely one of the strongest entries among the best action movies of 2026 and one of the best theatrical experiences the year has offered so far.
